Mastering Aggression in Texas Hold em E-mail

You may have heard it before: An aggressive player is a winning player. This is true in all forms of poker, but especially true in Texas hold em, particularly no-limit Texas hold em. This article talks about what is aggression, why is it so important, and how can you develop the aggression you need to become a winning poker player.

What is aggression in texas hold em poker?

Aggression essentially refers to how willing you are to initiate putting chips into the pot. A player who limps his or her way to the river, just calling any bet made, is not an aggressive player.

An aggressive player is one who wants to come out firing at all times, who would rather bet than check, would rather raise than call. He or she wants to dictate the action, not have it dictated to him or her.

Why is aggression so important in texas hold em poker?

Aggression is important in Texas hold em for the same reason it can be important in life. Aggressive people tend to get what they want. Most people’s instinct is to avoid conflict, and they will give up whatever is required to get the heat off.

If you imagine the player you would least like to face in a poker game, you are usually imagining an aggressive player. Think about it. When you hold a marginal hand, would you rather be facing someone who is going to let you find out if your hand is good cheaply, or someone who may put you to a decision for all your chips at any time?

Aggressive players simply have more ways to win. They can force you off your hand when you have or may have the best of it, they can intimidate you into letting them see more cards when they are drawing and they can even get more money when they win a pot since you can never know if this is the one time their bet means their hand is extremely strong.

How you can develop the aggression you need

If you are not a naturally aggressive person, developing aggression at the poker table can be difficult. However, you have to learn to separate your personal inclinations from what happens in poker games.

It is a game, after all, and anyone who will take your actions at the poker table personally (assuming they are legal actions) shouldn’t be playing. Remember that as you become more aggressive, other players at the table will start to fear you, and you will have more control over the game.

It may help to start at really low limits in online poker where the amount of chips you will need to move to be aggressive will not be overwhelming to you.

Of course, by the same token, at those lower limits your aggression may not be intimidating to others. Still, it will help you get practice being aggressive as you move up.
