Think Like A Winning Poker Player
In order to win money from poker, you need to think like a winning poker player. I know, I know, it’s easier said than done, but that’s the same for pretty much anything in life.
Nonetheless, here are a few tips to help you develop the mind of a winning poker player.
Think about the future of your hand
An unfortunate mistake that many amateur (and even intermediate) players make is that they do not consider where a hand is going, and they simply make decisions on the spur of the moment. A lot of the time, if a hand looks as though it’s becoming too tricky to play and you feel as though it will lose you money, it probably will.
If you are unsure of where you stand on the flop and you are facing a strong bet, what makes you think that things are going to get any better on the turn? The only thing that is going to happen is that you dig yourself into a deeper hole by calling and you lose more money than if you folded.
When you play a hand in poker, it is like trying to piece together a big jigsaw of broken information. The less you know about the hand, the harder it becomes to make the right decision, and the greater the chances are that you are going to lose money.
Never let bad beats destroy your game
You should never bring emotions with you when you sit down at the poker table. You have to be as cool as a cucumber in the North Pole if you want to avoid leaking away chips due to frustration, so learn to accept bad plays and bad beats from horrific opponents.
You can spend hours on end playing like a champion and winning great pots, only to lose it all in just a few hands because you lost your cool on one bad beat. If you want to gamble with your money, you may as well play online roulette at the casino instead of poker. Poker is a game of skill and good judgement, so lets keep it that way shall we?
Part of winning money in poker is preventing yourself from losing money, so plug the leaks and allow your bankroll to overflow with every pot you take down.
Consider all the aspects of the hand before making a decision
Do I think I have the best hand? Does my opponent think I have the best hand? Do I have a draw? Do I have odds to call? How many players are left in the pot? What are the stack sizes of my opponents?
It is all these sorts of questions and more that you need to ask yourself before making any decision in poker.
It definitely seems like a lot to think about for just one play alone, but over time you will naturally be able to consider all of these fine points in a split second and be able to judge whether or not it is worth playing on with the hand. It won’t happen over night, so you need to train your brain to look for the information it needs every time the action gets to you.
Even though it is likely to be a little tiresome to stop and really think about what is happening in the hand, it is worth taking the time to do so at every opportunity. Sooner or later you won’t even need to actively think, as you will have already picked up the information you need without having to force yourself to look for it. When this happens you should be able to see a dramatic improvement in the profitability of your plays.
