Many of the Hold’em players that try out pot-limit Omaha think they could play pretty much the same way they play Hold’em. If they win with a certain strategy at Hold’em it can’t be that wrong in pot-limit Omaha. But this is often the case if a Hold’em player doesn’t adapt properly and is learning essentially Omaha strategy. That’s the reason we will show you some beginner strategy:

You get dealt four hole cards before the flop is dealt. This is the only difference to hold’em and it makes Omaha look easier than it actually is. And here’s a big danger in pot-limit Omaha. You can create six different hold’em hands with only one Omaha hand. That’s the reason why you can create very strong hands in Omaha poker. Because of this fact, most of the players think they can take a look at every flop because every hand can win easily. But you shouldn’t play like that. Even though everybody else is calling before the flop, you should select your hands carefully and play only hands with big potential. Otherwise you’ll spend a lot of money paying for draws that are too weak or calling with hands that are not strong enough to win a showdown.
After the flop there are also some big beginner blunders. Most of the players overvalue their hands and call too much with it. They also draw to non-nut hands and think they can win if they hit. This is the biggest mistake you can make: Calling with a draw and if you hit you will loose even bigger.
Bluffing is far less valuable in Omaha than in Hold’em. You can win a lot of pots at hold’em if you bet or raise if you smell weakness. This is almost not possible in pot-limit Omaha. Hands are way stronger and your opponents can’t get away from hands easily. Even with relatively weak hands they think they could win the hand. Bluffing scare cards or on the river is a whole other story though.
