Short Stack Texas Hold'em Strategy
During any Texas Hold’em game, whether it be a cash game or tournament, there is always the possibility that you will become short-stacked and have a small amount of chips in relation to the blinds.
When you are in this short-stacked situation, your strategy and approach to the game should change in order for you to continue to make the most profitable plays. Even though you have fewer chips than other players at the table, it does not mean that you should resign yourself to defeat. Even as a short stack, you should still be able to play winning poker.
What does being short stacked mean?
Contrary to popular belief, being short stacked is not having less chips than the other players at the table. You are short stacked when you have a small number of chips in relation to the size of the blinds.
For example, if you have $1000 in front of you in a no limit Texas Hold’em poker game and everyone else has $2000, if the blinds were $5/$10 you would not be classed as being short stacked. However, if you had $1000 and every else also had $1000, if the blinds were $50/$100 you would then be classed as a short stack. In fact, everyone else at the table would be short stacked.
When are you short stacked?
Generally speaking, you could be in the short-stack area if you have anything less than 40 big blinds in front of you in a no limit Hold’em game.
However, with 40 big blinds you are in a relatively safe position, so around 10 to 30 big blinds is where you would need to certainly start incorporating a short stack strategy into your game. Anything less than 10 big blinds and you are at a pretty critical level.
What is the problem with being short-stacked?
The biggest problem with being short stacked is that you have too few chips to make advanced plays or bully your opponents. With a short stack, the chances of making it to the river betting round and still have enough chips to make a successful play with are very slim. So with a short stack, you’re effectively having to make bigger decisions before the flop and on the flop.
Furthermore, your small stack will prevent you from getting maximum value from your hands. This is because you cannot wager more than you have in front of you, so if you have a monster hand you are not going to be able to win as much as when you have a full stack in front of you.
Nonetheless, even with these slight problems you can still play a solid game of poker with a short stack if you have the right game plan.
Basic short stack strategy for Texas Hold’em.
To get the most from your short stack, you are going to need to stick to playing the big cards and avoid playing any hands with “potential”, such as suited connectors and low pocket pairs. You want to play hands that will hit the flop hard and give you the best opportunity to win the hand before or on the flop, because you’re not really expecting to make it past the turn (as in playing the turn, being all-in is fine) given the size of your stack.
So for example, big cards like AK, AQ and so on will be the hands to look out for. Hands like JTs may look promising but you simply do not have enough chips in front of you to make them worth playing.
When you get these big hands, you should continue to bet and raise as you normally would with a big stack. Don’t be afraid to put your chips in the middle, as playing passively is only going to make your situation worse. At the end of the day, if you are entering a pot you have to be prepared to back up your hand with the remainder of your stack, so don’t be afraid to put your chips in the middle.
The more you play short stack Texas Hold’em poker, the easier it will become. In general, I would not recommend that you enter into cash games with anything less than the full buy-in, as it is more profitable to have a full stack in front of you if you know that you are a winning player.
However, in tournaments there is not a lot that you can do about being short stacked, so you’re going to have to get used to it. Just remember that even when you are short stacked, you still have every chance to fight your way back into the game, so don’t give up.
